Mike Haywood Miami (OH) New Head Coach

Per Joe Schaad at ESPN, Mike Haywood is the new Head Coach at Miami of Ohio. I'll have more later.

Miami of Ohio will name Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood as its head coach on Tuesday, sources familiar with the situation said.

The hiring of Haywood will bring the number of African-American football coaches in the Bowl Championship Subdivision to six of 119 programs. He will succeed Shane Montgomery, who resigned last month.

According to two sources close to Haywood, he has agreed to contract terms with the university.

The RedHawks were 17-31 during Montgomery's four seasons as head coach and went 2-10 this season.

Haywood will join Turner Gill at Buffalo, Randy Shannon at Miami, Fla., Mike Locksley at New Mexico, Kevin Sumlin at Houston and Ron English at Eastern Michigan as the only black coaches in college football's top tier.

Haywood, a Notre Dame graduate, had been offensive coordinator for the Fighting Irish since 2005. He previously worked as an assistant at Texas, LSU, Ball State, Ohio University, Army and Minnesota. In 2005, he was named NCAA Division 1-A assistant coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association.

It's time to throw your calender out and rearrange the week. It's not Friday- it's Sunday. Blasphemy you say? Hardly. If the Hawai'i Bowl was played on a Saturday- then today would be Sunday. It's Outback Math. Anyways- here's a few links to keep you occupied:

Something For Everybody

You may, or may not, have noticed a new widget on the site. It's a video widget called FanDome. There is also a website that this widget comes from called Irish FanDome. It is a very well put together site that has oodles of videos and information on Notre Dame and it's mother site covers most of the other NCAA 1-A schools as well.

I encourage all of you to check them out, and if you are a blogger I suggest you use them as a video service as well.

That's all. Check out two of the most recent additions to their video library for Notre Dame:

The Greatest Team In The History Of The World Loses... Again

Despite reports to the contrary, USC is just another football team. Just another Trojan that got choked out by a beaver. Happens in L.A. all the time.

Shhhhh... Be vewy, vewy quiet...We's huntin wabbits...

This is interesting. Dan Feldman from the Michigan Daily writes...

The Michigan Marching Band will no longer play music between downs when
Michigan is on offense, according to the band’s e-newsletter. The change was
made so the Wolverines can better run their no-huddle offense.

Seriously? Note to the band: play Celtic Chant, Imperial March, & the Victory March every chance you get. As if you don't already.

DickRod looks and sounds as if he is getting in way over his head.

Somewhere Deep In The Notre Dame Special Police Bunker...

I found this at NDNation.com. It was written by a poster named mkovac. Please enjoy.

Somewhere deep in the NDSP bunker in Hammes Mowbray Hall the uniforms hang, freshly creased, the shoes are shined, the walkie-talkies rest, freshly covered with Armor-All and cleaned with Q-tips, filled with fresh batteries.

The Chief of Notre Dame Security Police gathers his team together.

"Ladies, gentlemen, the season is about to begin. We have a big task ahead of us, and it's time to give you your annual pep talk.

"Now, I've been watching a lot of 'Reno 911' and have a lot of great ideas that I'd like to implement if we have a chance.

"Well, we don't want any vehicles damaged like that bunch of misfits, so be careful out there or you'll be walking foot patrol and won't be able to hide in your car off campus in bad weather.

"OK. Let's take a look at your average home game perp (unrolls a picture of a young male). This is a Notre Dame student, most likely a sophomore. The freshmen are still too scared to openly drink in public or too dumb to figure out where the best parties are. The juniors and seniors - damn them! - are onto most of our tricks and continue to slip through the Net. More about "the Net' later.

"There are ways to tell if this punk is carrying. 'Carrying' doesn't mean that he's packing a weapon. 'Carrying' means that he's packing alcohol. That's right, Demon Rum. As the day gets longer, he will get sloppier and he will make our job of detection a lot easier.

"Here are a few tips for you rookies: First, the young pups tend to hang out in small groups. They think they have safety in numbers, so look for the small groups. If you see a lone drinker, watch out. They are very dangerous and could do anything. Got that? Rogue drinkers will need backup.

"Second, don't be afraid of these spoiled rich kids. They most likely have no street sense and can be cowed very quickly. The best approach is the direct approach. Each one of you has to move fast and pick them off and isolate. Move fast and isolate. Move fast and isolate. You ask them for their ID and then begin the interrogation. More on that later.

"Third, get right up in their face. This is class warfare. You are here to intimidate these little bastards and I don't want you to be afraid of Mommy and Daddy who might be a few feet away calling you "badge heavy." We have the full force of the Notre Dame legal department and Indiana law behind us, so kick ass and take names.

"Fourth, if things get fugly, use your primary weapon, the walkie-talkie. Always have a few fresh batteries in your pocket and practice looking official in the mirror between now and the first home game - that's Saturday September 6th for you rookies. "Go Day" we're calling it. And when it's time to get out there and bust chops, it'll be "Go Time". I'm not sure who we play. It doesn't matter. We're not going after the visitors. We're pretty much here to intimidate the Notre Dame kids and make their lives miserable.

"Fifth: Get your 10 Code calls down. I've got a recording of C.W. McCall's "Convoy" in my cubicle that you can listen to, so when you have time, come on over. You can page through my old copies of "Guns & Ammo" while you listen to it. It's a classic and we play it at all our law enforcement parties.

"Here's a short list of essential codes: 10-4 means "ok". 10-20, means location. We use that a lot. If you want to know where someone is, use your call sign to identify yourself, then use the call sign of the officer you are calling and then give the ten code. Mackewicz, your call sign is "Adam 12". I don't want you rookies out there giving each other Top Gun names like "Maverick" or "Iceman". You get to do that only after working 30 home games. Veterans only. Or, if you have 15 handcuff decals on your locker. That's proof of takedowns (arrests) for the uninitiated. Wojo, your call sign is "Adam 20". So, Mack will say, "Adam 12 to Adam 20. What's your 20?" Technically, it would be 10-20? with a question in your voice, but we'll go with the colloquial- that's college talk for what people normally do.

"If someone calls you and you are on a bust, you will respond with 'Adam 12. I'm 10-6'. This means you are busy. Then when you have finished writing the ticket and are back in service, you say, "Adam 12. I'm 10-8 near Gate 14."

"If you need Wojo to repeat his last message, say "Adam 20? 10-9 your last.” If there's a dead possum or a flat cat on Angela, call in a 10-11. If you have to take a crap back at the station, call in "Adam 12. I'm 10-19 back to the station for an equipment check." We all know what you're talking about.

"If you get a drunk punk, he's a "10-56" - an intoxicated pedestrian, so that's when it gets fun. Officers who like what you say on the radio will give you a double click on their mike. We aren't supposed to do that, but that's just some cop humor, so....be advised.

"One more. If a punk runs on you, then you are in pursuit and you need to call in a "10-80". You will have to run with one hand on your radio and one hand on your Sam Browne belt. You don't want to lose your equipment and if you haven't buckled your keepers on properly or snapped your lids on your mace and handcuffs, you will be losing stuff like feathers on a livestock trailer. Oh, and if you get the punk, and Mommy and Daddy start crying and you don't know what to say, just key the mike and say, "Adam 12. 10-92". That means "subject in custody". Everybody will double click you on that call. Righteous? Righteous. Yeah!

Ok, the Net. We are trying to close the net on the punks. This means we are shrinking their opportunities to be violators without consequence. They have to know that if they play with the bull – that’s us – they’re gonna get the damn horns – that’s us loaded for bear, and I’ll tell ya, after a few busts, you’re gonna turn into adrenaline junkies and love this damn job. They think that by drinking out of the red plastic cups, they can outsmart us. They think that if they put their booze in 7-Up cans, we won't catch them. We will. It's all "scienter" ladies and gentlemen. "Guilty knowledge". These rich punks don't know how to break the law with a straight face. They look guilty, they act guilty and they fear us. We own this place and we will not be f’ed with!

I said I'd tell you more about interrogation. Now there's something called the Fifth Amendment. The punks have a right to a Miranda warning if you arrest them. Did you get the catch? "if you A-RREST them." If you don't hook 'em up, you can detain them for a reasonable amount of time to question them before you subject yourself to the tort of false imprisonment and maybe "IIED" which is intentional infliction of emotional distress. Guys won't sue us for that, but some scared little freshman from Kansas might, so....be advised. No arrest, no Miranda. You can winkle out all sorts of information from these scared little bastards by skilled interrogation. You rookies will be partnered with veterans who know how to get the punks to pop their cherry and tell us everything. It's a blast and will get you lots of double clicks if you "accidentally" go open mike during questioning.

We are thinking of buying a Predator airplane with an alcohol sniffer capacity and I've contacted General Atomics out in California, but those babies run well over 7 million, so right now that's not in our budget, but I'm lobbying Fr. Poorman and we'll see. I'd just love to see these punks crap their pants with a Predator drone overhead.

Ok. Everyone, that's it for today. We'll talk the day before the game and we'll discuss encirclement tactics

Richard Jackson And The Disappearing Juniors

Richard Jackson has decided to leave the program. A free article is up at BGI.

The depth Notre Dame has acquired at WR was pushing the talented yet often injured Jackson further and further down the depth chart.

This is the 8th player from the monster 28 man class of 2006 to leave the program in some capacity or another. Transfers: Konrad Reuland (Stanford), Demetrius Jones (Cincinnati), Matt Carufel (Minnesota), Zach Frazer (Conneticut), Munir Prince (Missouri), and the soon to be Richard Jackson (destination unknown, but probably some Florida school). Medical: Bartley Webb. And of course Darrin Walls (personal). Darrin is expected back in the spring.

This puts Notre Dame at 75 scholarship players going into the season barring anymore departures. The NCAA allows 85 scholarship players. This is not a good thing in any shape as it not only looks bad, but it leaves ND short on bodies for depth.

The only "good" news is that this also increases the amount of scholarships the Irish can give to the incoming class of 2009. I sense that a few more offers may go out.

Beer Olympics VS. AK-47

You will, no doubt, see the following pics on a lot of different blogs and websites soon enough as they have already surfaced at The Big Lead. Good for them. Somehow they manged to survive a 3-9 season, stay in good standing academically, and party like a rock star (even if it might be a rock star from an 80's pop band). I'm positive that I see no AK-47's being shot in the air in the background or a stacks of mad cash.

Link-O-Rama Sunday

I haven't done one of these in a while, but I haven't done a keg stand in a while either. It's like riding a bike...

  • Troy Nunes provides recruiting junkies with a super secret video on how recruiting is really done.
  • Conquest Chronicles has earned its PhD, after a Gallipo incident.
  • Sunday Morning Quarterback provides his vision for the Skunkbear game this year.
  • Do you need something to spice up your tailgate party? There Is No Name On My Jersey reports on a few suggestions.
  • Dipshit For Life (Pete Fiutak) has his Notre Dame preview posted. CAUTION: Reading anything by this asshole may cause you to gouge out your eyeballs and leap from tall buildings. Please read in a safe environment.
  • EDSBS was a fly on the wall for a defensive meeting at Notre Dame.
  • 11 Warriors continues to fan the flame of flamers. "Tell me Billy. Do you like movies about gladiators?"
  • The Rock's commentary on Steve Orsini and the new neutered position of ND/AD.

Have fun!

Blog This

Have you become more like me? Do you find yourself searching the Internet for an extended period of time looking for any new info on Fighting Irish Football or College Football in general? Than this is the post for you.

Since I started this site, I have noticed a strange phenomenon. I can't verify with numbers, but I think Notre Dame Football may have more blogs dedicated to it than any other college football program out there. It's huge. You could literally spend days reading through all of them. This does create a little bit of a problem.

Where do you begin? Most of you already have a mental top 5 list for the Irish blogs you like the most. There may be no particular order, but they are the 5 you give the most credence to. I'll give you mine, in no order other than off the top of my head...

  1. Her Loyal Sons
  2. Blue-Gray Sky
  3. The House Rock Built (please post more, THRB is flipping hilarious)
  4. Irish Round Table
  5. Rakes of Mallow

These are the 5 I always look to first. However, NDLNA.com has changed that somewhat with its link basis. (A really great tool to get info and to pimp your site, Ryan is the shiznit)

There is however a whole mess of Irish blogs out there that are very well done and give their own unique spin on the program. And that is what this post is about.

During this dead period of news, I encourage each of you to surf the web for all of these blogs and see if there isn't something out there that you may have not seen before. I have been doing this for a few weeks now, and I am really impressed with all that I have seen. Check all of the blogs Blogrolls. See who they like and follow those links. Sadly, some blog writers don't update their Blogroll, or in some cases don't really have one at all. Every author has his own taste and I think their links are a reflection of their own personality and fan type.

Also, try expanding your horizons a little bit. No, I haven't gone mental and am encouraging everyone to look at a ballet blog. I mean, try reading our opponents sites. If you haven't already done it, I will warn you now... we are hated. But, so are dozens of other programs. You may be surprised by the quality, and my personal favorite, the comedy from other programs blogs. I take great care in giving Subway Domer an Enemy Blogroll so you and I can keep tabs on our opponents teams and football in general. I have tried to list at least one blog for each of our opponents and a few other teams that we as Irish fans don't really care for that much. Plus, a few of these are national blogs. And on that note, the national blogs are more informative and entertaining than anything the media mainstream has to offer. If you need a goog place to start, check out the College Football Blogger Awards Nominations at EDSBS.com.

Please try to search the links I have to the right and then follow the links they have and so forth. You will find a universe spralling with: good insightful football posts, pictures, comics, graphs, communities... a lot of cool shit.

I don't really get a lot of traffic compared to some of the big boys, but please give me your list on the comment link below of your "Top 5 Irish Blogs" and "Your Top 5 Other Than Notre Dame, But Still College Football Blogs" (what a title) I am really curious as to what you, the reader, are reading. (BTW- If you have a blog try not to list yours in the Top 5. If you have a blog and want it linked if it is not already, e-mail me your link and I will take a look and decide upon a link exchange).

Have fun! And Remember...

Update From The Master

Just a few quick updates for the loyal fanbase, and yes, the haters too.

- -

  • Subway Domer's Irish Lads: 2008 Recruiting Spectacular, will be published a day or two after signing day. Mike Lurie of NotreDameHockey.net and myself, have been working hard on this years class. I'm sure you all know everything there is to know of the incoming class, but please take the time to check this out. It should be a lot better than last years preview, which was still was honored by recruiting guru Mike Frank with a "very nice." (said by Mike in a Borat type accent).
  • Just a few short days after that colossus post, Subway Domer will bring you The State of Recruiting: 2008. This is another recruiting feature that Subway Domer provides, as I will break down and rank the states our beloved lads are coming from. If you haven't seen me whore this post before, I did this last year and will provide that link...NOW.
  • The nominations are in for the 2007 College Football Blogger Awards. Check out EDSBS.com for links to all of the nomination sites as well as instructions on how to vote.
  • I plan on leaving early from work tomorrow and take a little vacation from the place I refer to as "Absolute Hell". I should be arriving at home around 12:21 and will immediately bunker down in the war room until 10:17 PM. If you feel that you need to chat with a fellow domer on this holiest of days, use the shoutboxx or my e-mail. Just remember that coverage of signing day will be on CSTV (Lemming), and ESPNU (Idiots with a camera) for national coverage. For totally ND bias, check out UND.com.

And that's about it. Be sure to get a good nights rest, or severely wasted by way of Irish Carbombs in preparation of tomorrow.

What Now?

This seems a lot like the banishment of Adam and Eve from Eden. No more Irish football. You think I'm being a little too dramatic? Perhaps, but even after a disaster season such as the 2007 season was, I will still miss the Irish playing as much as I miss anything that I love.

But I digress before I even progressed. The question standing is; What now? Now we watch other teams all month long in meaningless bowl games that determine nothing. All the while, stuffing our fat faces with delicious holiday treats and waiting ever so patiently for National Signing Day and then Spring practice. sigh.

As far as this blog goes, to you my loyal readers (and haters), I will continue to bring my take to the table on all things that pertain to Fighting Irish football and NCAA D-1 football for that matter. Sorry hoops fans, my wife would feed me my nuts if I covered the hard wood as much as I cover what happens on the gridiron. If you need coverage of Men's hoops, check out Notes From The Geetar and Black and Green. If you are into Hockey, then go check out Colonialhead's Irish Blog if you haven't already.

This is what you can expect from your Emperor: Subway Domer...

  • Tribute pieces for all of the Fifth Year Seniors, as well as a tribute for any seniors this year that will not be coming back to Notre Dame for their fifth year.
  • The SDA's. Subway Domer Awards. (This is not a STD contrary to some previous statements).
  • Bowl coverage. This is how I started Subway Domer. (And poorly I might add)
  • The Subway Domer Bowl Battle. A contest for you all to play, and you can win a free prize. wow.
  • Extensive recruiting coverage. I'm not sure any blog or free site will bring you more coverage of the next incoming class. Bold statement? Maybe, but I follow this stuff with a passion and have a lot of plans for future posts to prove myself right.
  • Complete coverage of the Spring practice sessions and the Blue-Gold itself.

Alright, that about does it. If any of you would like to see anything else on Subway Domer, let me know either via e-mail or the shoutbox.

Go Irish!
