Weis Presser Tidbits
Charlie Weis spoke to the media today and laid out some new things for program this year. Here is a short rundown of what was said...
- Corwin Brown has been promoted to Associate Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach.
- Jon TAH-NOO-TAH has been promoted to Assistant Head Coach for Defense/ Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.
- TAH-NOO-TAH!!! will be calling the defensive plays.
- Bryant Young was officially announced as the Defensive Graduate Assistant.
- Romeo Crennel will not be the new Defensive Line Coach.
- Weis said he should have a decision on the Defensive Line coach soon.
- Weis is making himself the Offensive Coordinator and will be calling the plays.
- Weis would not rule out coaching from the press box next year and labeled the situation as "50-50," but on the lower end.
- Frank Verducci was officially named Offensive Line Coach and Running Game Coordinator.
- Tony Alford was officially named Running Backs Coach.
- Weis mentioned that several players will have to have their tonsils removed (no shit) and may not be ready for Spring Ball, but will be ready for the Summer/Fall.
- There is no official word from the University on which players will be returning for a 5th year in 2009.
- Weis mentioned that the 2010 recruiting class should be about 24-25 players to get the team up to the 85 allotted amount of players.
- Weis is feeling good after surgery on his right knee, and has postponed the surgery to his left knee that was scheduled for this month, "indefinitely."
- Darrin Walls is back in school and with the team, and will be ready to go in the Spring.
- Luke Schmidt's football career is over because of concussions.
- Jashaad Gaines is still on a leave of absence from the University due to personal issues. Weis said the "door is open" for a return, but nothing has been decided yet.
I'll have some commentary on these events in a day or so. I'm still waiting for my wife to give birth to our first child. She (daughter), is already not listening to us and refuses to leave the womb. So... you never know.

Random Randomness, Meticulously Placed At Random
As we head full steam into the later stages of the recruiting wars, I sit here at my computer with a level 5 migraine, a pregnant wife, and bracing for a blizzard- that just doesn't want to start. There are many, many topics to cover and I'm sure we have many, many opinions on these topics, but right now I have just a few random points to put out there. Welcome to the discussion. And if you don't think that this post is a random thing of beauty, then what is that picture of Tom Lopienski doing on the left hand side? Hmm? That's what I thought...
Recruiting is at a fevered pitch right now. As it stands, the Fighting Irish have 17 commitments and are ranked #18 by Scout.com in the recruiting rankings. Not exactly what we are used to, but this class has the same feel as the 2006 class. That class was ranked 5th in the team rankings and had a whopping 28 players. But, since then the 2006 class has lost 10 players due to transfers, medicals, and being a douche bag. So, as long as the 2009 class stays their 3 or 4 years, they should collectively be as good or even better than the 2006 class.
Don't jump over the edge just yet. Weis is not done with the 2009 class by any stretch of the imagination. Along with some current offers that the staff has been actively pursuing they are looking at offering more kids as well, and have done so already. The current offer list has 
these recruits offered that are looking at Notre Dame and the Irish have at least a shot at gaining a commitment:
- Manti Te'o (LB) 5*****
- Jelani Jenkins (LB) 5*****
- Tyler Gaffney (FB) 4****
- Jawanza Starling (S) 4****
- Michael Buchanan (DE) 3***
- Marlon Pollard (CB) 4**** Committed to UCLA
- Byron Moore (S) 4**** Committed to U$C
There are, of course, other prospects that Notre Dame has offered that are uncommitted, but these are the ones that they still have a shot with signing. Pollard, although a recent decommitment from the Irish, is still being heavily pursued by the Irish. It ain't over yet, but is probably unlikely that Pollard changes his mind again- although I've seen weirder. The other committed prospect is Byron Moore, who most people on the inside think that his commitment to U$C is very soft. Buchanan is the most recent offer and I suspect that ND may have a couple more in mind before the end of next week. Just a hunch. I think Notre Dame will land 2 or 3 more prospects before it is all over with.
The coaching search is still quiet. No new hires have been made for any of the coaching 
vacancies. This is a slow and excruciating process for Irish fans, but one that has to take its course. A lot of names have been thrown out, but nothing of real substance has really been put out in front just yet. Also, there has been reports of Latina being fired, but that has been denied by the University. And when in the hell is Weis going to show Mendoza the line to the unemployment office? The Mendoza and Latina jobs ( Strength and Offensive line jobs) are probably the two that most need a change. Notre Dame passes the eye test with their lineman... until some guy that weighs 40 pounds less blasts them on their ass.
I don't expect anything to surface too soon, but I'm not sure if that is good news or bad news. The fact remains that these staff assignments are of vital importance and if Notre Dame is going to take that next step as an improving team, these hires need to be of a first class nature. Weis knows this and I am sure he is doing all that he can to make the best possible hires from a pool of candidates that meets the criteria that both he and the administration have set out in front of them. Tenuta was a late hire last year, and I'm pretty sure that he has worked out well for the Irish- and for wildlife everywhere.
A few notes on the enemy. A mini-Link-O-Rama if you will...
- Boston College has hired defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani as it's new head coach after Jagazwieuiosfj;l was caught looking in a peephole in the NFL locker room.
- Taylor Mays is staying put at Southern Cal. Mark Sanchez is still undecided, but one of Sanchez's top targets , Vidal Hazelton, is transferring to Cincinnati.
- LeSean McCoy is declaring for the NFL Draft and leaving Pittsburgh to fend for itself.
- Jim Harbaugh is staying at Stanford. Lots of rumors were swirling about Harbaugh interviewing for NFL jobs. They obviously didn't want him.
- And I'm positive that you already saw that U$C's offensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisian is now the head coach at Washington, and he hired U$C's defensive coordinator Nick Holt to do the same job at Washington as well. Either USC gets worse or Washington gets better... or neither.
Subway Domer News...
Despite pleas to my employer that National Signing Day is in all actuality a national holiday and worthy of a paid holiday, they have made no effort to pay me to stay at home to check message boards for information on the stream of Letters of Intent that will be coming over the fax machines at Notre Dame. So, it remains to be seen if I will be posting on that glorious day. If i do, I will have a Live Blog up and running for you to vent and boast.

Congratulations are in order to OC Domer. That SOB won the Subway Domer Bowl Pick-Em for the 2nd year in a row. Last year he asked me to make a donation at the Grotto in lieu of the T-Shirt prize. Those regular alumni must really like not having to put the word "subway" as a prefix to their alumni status. So what's it going to be this year OC, saint or shirt?

Subway Derailed?
Not a fucking chance guy. I have been battling a severe case of workaholism, some sort of bronchial damage that has me wheezing and gasping for breath like a 90 year old, a honey-do list, and have been in a deep football depression. Shit sucks. Oh yea, I have been the main battlefield for a blog war between Irish Band of Brothers and Domer Sports Report. I am staying out of this because it seems insanely childish. I am an IBB reader and enjoy that site. DSR (not Detroit Sports report for yet another Tigers loss) is new- listen Mark, if you want a link... quit begging for one like a child. Keep posting on a regular and when I update my blogrolls in July, you might find yourself there. Or, maybe not at all. I don't know and don't care. Ithink you may have been a troll and that doesn't sit well with the Emporer. We'll see.
All this has led to a less than stellar effort from myself, The Subway Domer. But, I apologize to no one. It's fucking summer and I have been enjoying as much as a workaholic, with fucked lungs and a demanding wife can. However, I feel the need to comment on a LOT of things that have gone on in NDNation recently. I won't sit here and pretend to report on these things as if you did not already know them, but I feel you are owed my commentary on these events.

May 31st, Kevin White Leaves Notre Dame for same position at Duke. Huh. I wasn't shocked,
but I really didn't see this thing ending so abruptly.
Kevin White had become a somewhat infamous character in Irish Athletic lore. His scheduling tactics for the football team were unforgivable in the eyes of many alumni and subway alumni. His "barnstorming" theory was a good thing in concept, but was very poorly executed up to this point. His bumbling of George O'Leary and his hiring and firing of Ty Willingham made him a household name.
Here's the thing, it doesn't matter. Here or somewhere else, an insanely hard or easy schedule, or whatever... winning cures all.
So go ahead and search for a new Athletic Director. Bring up names like Holtz, Phelps, and whoever else from the past that you can dig up. It really doesn't matter if we are winning. It doesn't. Oh sure, we may bitch about a few things, but we would not be sticking venom into this subject as much as we have been for the last few years. Watch what happens in 2009 and 2010. It may be Kevin White's fault.
I am by no means an apologist for Dr. White, but he has about as much impact against Michigan and USC as I do.
June 3rd, Chris Zorich returns to Notre Dame as the manager of student welfare and development inside the athletics department. Zorich has become a permanent fixture at Notre Dame during gamedays since Charlie Weis became the Head Coach. This is a similar plot line to another former Irish great. (I said great motherfuckers. Don't doubt me.) Ron Powlus. Begging in a small administrative role and turning good work into a reward of a coaching position. Maybe Zoro has no aspirations of this, but any fan of his can only hope of having him in Ian Williams or Brandon Newman's face at practice and on gamedays. Wahoo!
June 5th, Phil Steele is in my mailbox. So much information it gave me a headache and induced my bronchial infection to attack at full scale.
June 5th, Dan Fox committed to the Fighting Irish. The 6'4" 219 lbs. linebacker from St. Ignatius high school in Cleveland, Ohio gave his verbal pledge to Weis on Thursday and it was a commitment Irish fans have been anticipating.
Dan has a very athletic edge to him and his single greatest attribute has been his ability to cover the pass at his linebacking position.
Dan is the sixth commitment for the class of 2009 and will be a very welcome addition to a class that is looking to keep the momentum going after the 2008 class.
Dan is rated as a 4 star on Rivals.com and turned down offers from Boston College, Michigan State, and Virginia. He chips away another piece of this 2009 class that is forming. With only 19 scholarships available (went up one when Nagel left) Fox represents 2 of the 3 or 4 LB commits for this year. Spots are filling up and the pressure may now be on players such as Jenkins, Te'o, and Telfort.

June 6th, Alex Bullard commits to Notre Dame. The 6'3" 285 lbs. guard from Brentwood 
Academy in Brentwood Tennessee gave his verbal pledge via a news conference most of you who are reading this have already seen.
Alex is the first offensive lineman and the 7th overall to commit to the 2009 incoming class. The first offensive lineman in a class that needs to rake up about 4 or 5 with most of those being tackles. This now leaves the Irish with about 12 or 13 scholarships remaining to give to incoming recruits, and two of those offers are for specialists. Ben Turk, a punter, and Dustin Hopkins, a kicker.
Alex also represents a small trend in Irish recruiting. they are doing well in Tennessee. Alex is the 3rd 4 star recruit to commit to the Irish in as many years. (Harrison Smith and Golden Tate class of 2007). Beating fat Phil in anything is great, but after recruiting losses to Ben Martin, Chris Donald, and Gerald Jones for the 2007 class, recruiting geeks should be joyous in the fact that we received a pledge from an outstanding recruit both on and off of the field.
Once again, spots are filling up and ND might get another boom soon after a few summer visits. Stay tuned to ALL Irish blogs and sites for more info in a very interesting recruiting year.

Damn right Jon. I won't argue with him, and I suggest everyone else should do the same. Tenuta met with the press and looked as wild-eyed and crazy as ever.
I love the way he looked and sounded as he answered each question as if he just got his wisdom teeth pulled. This is very much an old school coach and will bring a level of toughness that has been severely lacking.
Corwin=Enthusiasm
Tenuta=Tough
Hopefully this combination will have a bountiful harvest of 43 yard rushers and quarterbacks on their ass.

What The F.....
John Tenuta to Notre Dame? What in the fuck is going on?! According to Irish Illustrated he has been hired and Bill Lewis will retire and will be announced after National Signing Day.
I really have no commentary on this development, other than to think that the timing is fucking horrible. If this effects any recruit to rethink their commitment to ND, than I am going to go apeshit all over Rivals. Sampson, Prister, Farrell, Ashley Russell... all of them. Rambo style.

I will say this however: This can be a good thing, but the timing. Do you really think that Tenuta will just coach DB's as Lewis did? What is to become of Corwin Brown? This is fucked up.
