Trouble On The Corner

Notre Dame is seeing some bad news lately as it pertains to the cornerback position and the future of the depth chart. Marlon Pollard, a four star CB from California that committed to ND months ago after decommitting from UCLA, has recommitted to UCLA.
It is, what it is. I'm not going to harp on Pollard for flip-flopping, but to shrug this off as a minor event is just plain dumb. The depth chart is suffering at cornerback with the news that Gary Gray is not enrolled for the spring semester.
Notre Dame will be fine at the position next year, but after 2009 we may see a void if Weis can't get 2 or 3 commits at CB in 2010. The depth chart has McNeil, Anello, Walls, Slaughter, Blanton, and Banks playing in 2009 with Anello and McNeil out of eligibility at the end of the season and Walls may decide to leave early. Anello is not a factor at CB. So 2010 could have only Slaughter, Blanton, and Banks if Gray doesn't return, although all reports are that he should return to ND in the Summer.
Having Pete Carroll in California is bad enough, but to also compete with Slick Rick at UCLA is going to be a tough task to overcome for an Irish staff that has done pretty well in that state since the arrival of Weis.

Hey subway, well said. he is a fuckball. Quick question for you....in the blog says most all reports have gray returning? Just wondering where you recieved the info, and wondering if you know why he isnt enrolled for the spring. I guessing academics...?

Did Cave use up a year of eligibility this year, I don't recall him playing?

Billy in Ohio-

The reports about Gray are coming from ND students and a guy that knows a guy. I wish I could give you something more concrete. He is gone for personal issues... which in ND speak, is probably academics. The rumor is that it was the same kind of issue that Walls was dealing with.

Anon @ 4:03-

Cave was the long snapper against SDSU, I believe. He burnt it during the first game and never saw a down again from what I remember. This is why Cowart is an important recruit. We need a good long snapper, and it keeps us from burning eligibility of centers that need to redshirt a year.

This is the first time I've been to your site. Great job!

You make a good point about the lack of future depth at corner. Maybe it would be wiser to use Nyshier Oliver at that position since he probably won't see much playing time at wide receiver.

Also, I'm providing a link to a great recruiting site that provides videos for most of the incoming freshmen.

Also, I think that Tyler Stockton will be an impact player at DT as a freshman which will allow Ethan Johnson to play End where he will be most effective.

Stockton reminds me of Chris Zorich.

SD, once again nice post. Losing Pollard is definitely a big hit. I just have to clarify a few things for you and the rest of the ND faithful. Darrin Walls will not leave early, he'll get his year of eligibility if he graduates on time, which he will. Secondly with Walls, it wasn't academics for his personal reasons for leaving in the Fall, rather it had to do with Res Life. Nothing major.

As for Gray, yes it was of the academic nature, but he'll get that cleared up as he was leaning to staying close by and enrolling at either Holy Cross College or Indiana University South Bend.

And this information is coming from the ND Football Offices in the GUG and the Academic Services for Student-Athletes Office.
