Random Randomness At Random

With so much going on in the College Football Universe (Bowl season, recruiting and the HS All-American Games, and everything else), I really can't put together a good post that flows and actually has a point. So instead I am just going to put a list of thoughts of what is going on in my head.

I wanna say something. I'm gonna put it out there; if you like it, you can
take it, if you don't, send it right back.

• Omar is gone and isn't coming back. Sigh. To say this is a disappointment, would be an understatement. Omar was THE perfect fit for ND's 3-4 scheme. But Charlie, the constant recruiter, has offered DT Mike Martin a scholarship. Martin is not the player Omar is right now, but is a very good player with a lot of upside. This is not a "dire" situation as some people would lead you to beleive. ND still has Ian Williams coming back asfter starting a few games at NG and seeing a lot of time off of the bench, and It has commitments from Sean Cwynar, Hafis Williams, and most importantly: Brandon Newman. If ND locks up Martin and gets another quality DT next year... all is well.
• Ryan Mallett looks like he is heading to UCLA. We all saw this coming after the hire of R. Rod. I have to say that I am a little disappointed. I would have liked to have seen Clausen VS. Mallett II, III, and IV. With that said, Michigan may find itself in a HUGE jam if they do not land Terrelle Pryor. David Cone and Jason Forcier do not scare me. Michigan is in trouble... and I like it. Fuck Michigan.
• The Irish have 14 commits playing in the Army All-American game and 2 commits in the ESPN Under Armour All-American game. Hefty numbers for what is still, what most experts would agree, the #1 rated recruiting calss for 2008. The Irish are not done and it could get even better. WR Deion Walker could pull the trigger Saturday at the ESPN game or even WR/S Gerrell Robinson at the Army game. ND will also be getting visits from DE and Subway Domer favorite Datone Jones and also from Texas A&M commit, DE Kapron Lewis-Moore. Plus, there may be a suprise recruit in there somewhere.
• This Bowl season sucked ass. Blowouts seemed to be the "In" thing. I am doing decent in the Subway Domer Bowl Bonanza (2nd behind OC Domer) but after watching most of these games, my prediction of a LSU blowout win looks like crap. It might be the other way around now. Seriously, did you EVER think WV was going to kick the living shit out of Oklahoma? They did, and now the Title game looks in jeopardy. I wonder hoe the Kansas and Virginia Tech matchup will end up?
• Stop the Charlie Weis to Dolphins talk. Ain't gonna happen.

Fixing College Football

Yesterday I was in the car on the way home from work and was listening to ESPN radio. It was the Colin Cowherd show with some host (his name escapes me at the moment) filling in for Colin. The topic was How to fix college football. The premise was designed to get listeners to call in or e-mail their thoughts and ideas about how to better the game. There was one exception... no talk of a playoff at the end of the season.

At first I was dumbfounded. "What the hell is wrong with the greatest thing on this earth other than a retarded way to decide a TRUE champion?" It was about that time that I turned into the driveway and went inside. I never did hear the conversation, but not long after I went inside I found myself scribbling down a few things. There are many things that are great with College Football, but here are the things (and they are just a few) that I would change...

Early Signing Period. It has been said many times by coaches, analysts, and fans from around the country... recruiting is the life blood of any program. But, recruiting has also become a huge business and time consuming affair for all parties. And quite honestly, it has become a circus. I think the best way to help the college game would be to insert an early signing period. Let's just say, August 1st. If a recruit wishes to pledge himself to a program, let that person put it on paper and fully commit himself. If a recruit signs, and changes their mind in say, December, that person will be ineligible to play in their freshman season with the following exceptions...

1. A coaching change.
2. Status of their academics.
3. Granted permission to change by the NCAA due to an appeal.

If a recruit does not sign by August 1st, they can still give their signature and commit by February 1st. This might cut down on the poaching of athletes, the lies, and the games that are played by coaches and recruits alike. It will allow coaches to have a firmer grasp on what their roster will look like in the coming year, and could take some of the pressure off of the H.S. kids to allow them to concentrate more on their senior year.

Pull the stick out of your ass. It gets worse every year. College officials are throwing out the yellow rags more and more for celebrations. For what college football fans say they love about the sport, the emotion of athletes playing for their school and not money (which is a farce anyhow) some out there want to see robots playing. This is a different age in the world, let alone College Football. Let them get excited and have a little fun. I am not saying, that this should be more like the NFL because it shouldn't. If you watch a lot of college games you understand what I am getting at. It is hard to set guidelines for this but, I'll give it a shot...

• No spiking.
• No taunting. (The player would have to be specific with his gestures to an opposing player or the opposing bench)
• No group stuff.
• No props (Sharpies, signs, etc.)

Other than that, let them play. "Act like you been there before?" What if they haven't? What if they just picked the ball off in the redzone to seal a victory? Chris Spielman. Shut the hell up. Let them have fun and in turn play the game with emotion and fire. Next time you bitch about a player having a little too much fun out there, look to see if you either grew a new patch of grey hair, or still have that stick firmly planted up your...

Practice makes perfect. This has never made sense to me. A school can only have practices after the regular season if they are heading to a bowl game. That's cool. Letting the rich get richer while those who need all the help they can get, are shut out. It's an American tradition. Quite simply: as long as there are teams playing and practicing, every team should be able to practice as well.

Stop rewarding mediocrity. It is time to cut the bowls in half. While this will never happen because of money, it would be a major fix to the college game. 32 bowls? Not needed. I will stick to the parameters of no playoffs and give you the fix...

1. 16 Bowl Games. Same BCS format for the BCS games with the top 4 teams placed in bowls with seeding. (It's not a playoff if you call it a bowl game) All games are to be played on December 29th, December 30th, New Years Eve and New Years Day.
2. A plus1 National Title Game. Played 1 week after bowls are decided.
3. Only conference champions and teams with 8 wins over 1-A opponents are eligible. This would also mean that a team would not be eligible for the National Title if they have ANY games versus a 1-AA school.

Schools should not be rewarded for a 6 win season that could turn into a losing campaign after the bowl game. And scheduling 1-AA schools is just wrong. This would provide the fans with a more exciting time and really put forth a true champion. Without a full blown playoff.

In Conclusion. I love college football. I think it is the greatest sport in the world. I also think that it does need tweaking. Do not speak of "Tradition" If tradition would have prevailed, football would have been banned. This is an ever evolving sport that needs tweaked from time to time. Even Rockne would agree with that. He changed a lot of the aspects of the game as well as many other coaches. And if Rockne isn't college football, who is?

Everybody Else Is Doing It... Episode VI The Empire Strikes Back

Welcome to the 5th and final edition of Subway Domer's "Why The Hell Not, 2007 Season Predictions." Enjoy!





The Fighting Irish are heading to a BCS bowl for the 3rd year in a row. Which one? Back to the desert for a nineteen year rematch with those couch-burning rednecks from the mountains- West Virginia. The entire BCS shook out like this:

• BCS Championship #1 LSU VS. #2 Texas
• Rose Bowl #6 UCLA VS. #10 Penn State
• Orange Bowl #4 Virginia Tech VS. #8 Louisville
• Sugar Bowl #9 Georgia VS. #7 Miami
• Fiesta Bowl #3 Notre Dame VS. #5 West Virginia

(No Mid-Majors made it this year. The leading contenders were supposed to be TCU and Hawaii, but both teams ended up with 2 losses and out of the top 15).

Notre Dame (11-1) VS. West Virginia (11-1)

What could be a better way to finish a great season, than to end a long bowl losing streak? Ending a drought in the desert? We as Irish faithful have heard this mumbo jumbo before. Remember Oregon State and Ohio State? Well, here's how it went down...

The game got off to a fast start for W.V. Vaughn Rivers took the opening kickoff 99 yards to the house to go on top 7-0. After a 3 and out for the Irish, W.V. took the ball at their own 20 and marched down the field in 12 plays and scored on a 4 yard run by Slaton to make it 14-0. The game was then delayed 65 minutes after W.V. fans took their nacho boxes, torched them, and threw them on the field. Among the 397 arrested; Noel Devine, Pac-Man Jones, and Deion Sanders. (Apparently Deion didn't get enough bowl action at the 2nd straight Emerald Bowl appearance by his Florida State Criminoles... they lost to Navy). After the smoke cleared, literally, W.V. kicked off to Armando Allen. AA took it 71 yards to the 27 yard line. 2 plays later, the Irish got on the board with a 21 yard strike from Sharpley to Kamara. The Mountaineers took it right back to the Irish with another long drive (83 yards on 14 plays) that ended with another TD run by Slaton that put W.V. up 21-7 at the half. Fox made the mistake of putting cameras outside of the ND locker room at halftime. They now owe the FCC millions of dollars after Charlie's halftime speech turned out to be more like a Sam Kinnison reincarnation. It seemed to work though. ND took their opening drive right down the field with fire and balls. Thomas for 3, Aldridge for 4, Hughes for 4, Jabbie for 2, Schwapp for 6 etc. 21 plays for 81 yards and a 1 yard TD by Jabbie that took 11 minutes off the clock. (21-14 W.V.) The defense had been giving up long drives to W.V. and they were resulting in TD's. They needed a stop, or Weis was going to have a heart attack. They gave up 1 first down and got the ball back with a shanked punt that went out of bounds at the W.V. 41 yard line. The very next play the Irish came out with a 5 wide set. (Kamara, Tate, Grimes to the left and Demetrius Jones and Crlson to the right). Sharpley took the snap in the shotgun tossed it to Grimes and then Grimes unloaded a bomb to Carlson sitting all alone on the 3 yard line after 4 defenders followed Jones on a crossing route. TD Irish... It's tied 21-21. Start the 4th... West Virginia proceeded to take another drive down the field after several big runs from Pat White. They lost their groove a little though after Chris Stewart got in on a play and CRUSHED White on a blind sided sack after white rolled out to his right on a pass play. White was helped off the field and did not return for the remainder of that series, and the Mountaineers settled for a 37 yard field goal by Pat McAfee. (24-21 W.V.) ND had to answer with only 5 minutes remaining in the game. What an answer it was. The kickoff was returned to the 38. 3 plays later Sharpley saw Hord running free on a post. Evan cocked his arm back-WHAM!!! Reed Williams crushed Evan's arm and forced a fumble that Johnny Dingle fell on. W.V. ball; leading 24-21 with 3 minutes left. They ran Slaton left and Slaton right for a first down. The clock was winding down, but Weis was holding on to his T.O.s. They ran Slaton right-BAM!!!...kaboshed by Kerry Neal and the ball was on the ground. Crum picked the ball up on the 2nd bounce, ran 5 yards and saw Zibby coming up behind him and handed it off to him. 83 yards later TOUCHDOWN IRISH!!! 28-24 ND with 1:34 on the clock. ND squibbed the kick down to the 27. White threw 2 incomplete passes and then on 3rd down, threw the sealer to Ambrose Wooden for the INT. 3 kneel downs by Evan later...Fiesta Bowl Win. Morgantown implodes.

The Irish finished 2nd in the polls behind LSU. 2008 should be grand.

This was not a return to glory story. This is an Empire rising from the ashes of desolate times caused by previous regimes. It is time to rule once again.

Copycats, Copybucks, Copymakers And So Forth

You saw this coming, right? Have you been saving up the comebacks? For as long as Notre Dame has had its T.V. contract with NBC, the fans of the Big Integer have dogged ND about it. Well, maybe their contempt was out of pure jealousy.
On Friday the 18th, The Big Ten network sent out a letter to bloggers intergerwide. Here are the contents:

Bribery. Get the word out and get some treats. The best news about this new network is that the great games of Indiana VS. Northwestern or Illinois VS. Minnesota will now be seen on their network and not on ESPN. Now ESPN can fill its slots up with Duke VS. East Carolina or Baylor VS. Rice.
This is of course, an obvious cash grab for another greedy conference. Yes, this network is going to show more than just football, but let's face it...football is king and the nucleus. This is another direction the big conference schools are going to further line their pockets with dough. This is why you will NEVER see a playoff in 1A or even a plus one game.
Say what you will about ND and NBC. The fact is, is that ND goes with the flow of the other Universities and does what it must to survive as an independent. The conferences are trying to do all they can to destroy that. Their money means control and to do things their way. If it weren't for the NBC contract, ND may be forced into doing things it doesn't want to do as far as scheduling and so forth.
Try as they might, no Big Integer school will EVER have the draw or the prestige of ND... but they will try.

The Aftermath

Well I have tried to post since the Sugar Bowl, but I have just been unable to crawl out of the toilet. That is until now. I have put my foot down and have decided to move on. I do want to state a few things about the game that coincide with the previous post and the keys to victory.
OFFENSE
1. I thought we did a good job of protection considering the competition. The sacks and real pressure came from ineffective screens and indecisiveness on Quinn.
2. No turnovers... that was a prayer.
3. The biggest surprise to many was the efficient ground attack by Walker, at least in the first half. It was hard to run the ball in the 2nd because of a complete meltdown by the defense...moving on.
DEFENSE
1. The pressure on 6'6" 260 lbs.( apparently this is JaMarcus Russell's new name, so that is what I will call him), was never there. Abiamiri swatted a ball for a fumble but really that was it.
2. We did stop the run... in the first half. Do you see a theme here? In the 2nd half the D forgot to tackle and became a Pop Warner team. LSU commenced to run the clock out on a dismal night.
3. We got the 2 turnovers and almost a 3rd. Yes a goal is met!
NOTE: I never mentioned pass coverage as a key, because well, we have never done it and I'm not sure it is in the playbook.
INTANGIBLES
1. Pulling out the trick plays does not mean a fake punt during your first possession. Maybe a trick play that would work might be a field goal? They seem very tricky.
2. Special Teams... not so special. THANKS BRIAN!!!
3. Penalties weren't so bad but the Shark bit too hard a few times. Also There were a lot of no calls on pass interference. Rape Charges are to be filed in the future by ND on behalf of any potential receiver we had out there.
4. Once the Wooden fumble was overturned, it was over. No life and no nuts were found on the team.

That sums up my thoughts on the game. LSU was clearly the better team in every category. It is going to take a lot of help to get ND, our team, up to the level that we desire it to be.

NEWS AND NOTES

• Notre Dame had 7 regular season opponents in bowl games. Their record was 2-5.
• The PS2 Challenge is over. My record is 18-11 and its is 15-14. With 3 games remaining I win by default since it picked Cincy along with me.
• The Army All-American game is on tomorrow at noon. Try not to cry when the only commit we get that's left is an O lineman.

National Holiday/ Quinns Last Stand

SUGAR BOWL

This is the day that most of us out there have been waiting for. I'm sure some of you have been wondering about the absence of material about the Fighting Irish heading into the Sugar Bowl tonight. It's simple, I have not been discussing it at all. Since the BCS selections were made I have known all the talk for this game would be about the speed of LSU and the lack there of for ND. The bowl losing streak? Yep I knew that was coming. Blown out by our best competition? You bet. The list can go on and on and on. And quite frankly, I didn't want to talk about it. Was it out of fear? Hell no! It is just a different approach for the Subway Domer than in any other game this year. Just like Weis and ND are taking a different route in this years bowl game as compared to last years game against the Buckeyes, I have as well.

With all that said, F*#K LSU!!! It is real hard not to make comparisons to the '92 Sugar Bowl. This game has all the makings of that classic battle. The keys to the game and the victory...

OFFENSE

1. Keep defenders off of Quinn, and if no one is open Quinn has to tuck it and run or throw it away right away. Quinn has had a tendency to hold on to the ball a little too long when nothing has developed.


2. Absolutely no turnovers. To win ND will need every possession and get points out of them whether it be 3 or 7.


3. RUN the ball. This will mean not only the draws we see with Walker, but Aldridge and T2 must get involved with the power attack to enable a true play action capability.

DEFENSE

1. Pressure, pressure, pressure. The D-line must get to the QB and force throws that are errant. This will allow the LBs to concentrate on coverage and takes some of the "pressure" off of the secondary.


2. Stopping the run. Not just stopping it, but doing it with the front 7 ( or 6 in the Nickel) so Our safeties don't feel like they have to be in on every play as to allow better coverage on play action passes and the whole passing game in general.


3. TURNOVERS!!! We have got to get at least 2 TOs and it would be nice if one of those was returned.

INTANGIBLES

1. Weis has to pull out the trick plays.(and not just that Samardzija reverse pass that ha s never worked) We have seen a lot of success this bowl season with teams using them, most notably Boise State, and these plays create momentum and loosens up the defense.


2. Special Teams needs to be productive. The return game has to be solid. I'm not sure if Zibby will be doing KR but these are the hidden yards, as well as PR, that help drives and sets up field position. The question mark is with FG, Gioa has to nail the 35 and under.


3. Penalties. Too many times this year we have seen drives killed over penalties. Keep these down and you dictate the play calling.


4. Keep the Heads up!!! If ND gets down early they must not pack it in. Keep plugging away and keep the comebacks against MSU and UCLA in the back of their minds. Just look at the bowl season in general and the comebacks that were made. It can happen if you just execute the plays.

Those are a lot of keys but LSU is that good. However, I have that feeling that things just might go that way. This could be the game we have been waiting for.

• Subway Domer--------------- ND 31 LSU 23 The streak is over and respect comes our way at last. GO IRISH!!!


• PS2---------------------------ND 45 LSU 31 The black box surprised me. Quinn got hurt in the 1st quarter but came back in the second half and threw for 4 TD in that half alone.

Apples and Oranges...PS2 Challenge

ORANGE BOWL

This is a game that goes along with the comparative "Like apples and oranges". Louisville has a dynamic offense that can do whatever it want to do. WF not so much. I'm not going to go much deeper than that for one reason, I haven't been right for a lot of these games. Both of these teams are well coached but the Ville has more gamebreakers at more positions. WF however, has been going against the grain all season and just keeps winning. Look for more trick plays in this game, as I believe the Fiesta Bowl might have influenced both of these coaches.

• Subway Domer------------------UL 34 WF 27 Originally I have thought that this might be a blowout in favor of the Lou. But seeing what has transpired in the other bowls has led me to believe that these underdogs are showing up not just to show, but to win.
• PS2-----------------------------UL 38 WF 24 WF could have won but turnovers and penalties in the 2nd half gave the game to the Lou. Brohm had 331 yds. and 3 TD.

Not the way I thought it was going to go, but I'll take the win.

New Years Day and the Apocolyspse/PS2 Challenge

Due to the extreme amount of bowl games on this day (better than last year), The Subway Domer is going to do a brief rundown of the day and the picks. Time to rock out with your cock out!

OUTBACK BOWL

Joe Pa and Fat Phil. What a way to start New Years , with some resolutions: 1. Do not die...ever 2. Eat everything you see, screw diets!

• Subway Domer--------------TENN 26 PSU 13 Morrelli and his barbed-wire tattoo bunch are no challenge for this fast and superior defense. My only hope is this will have no effect on Chris Donald.
• PS2-------------------------TENN 24 PSU 31 Tony Hunt is a beast and had 3 TD. Meachum was knocked out of the game in the first with a broken pelvis.

Tony Hunt was a beast. Fat Phil may be one of the worst big game coaches in football, and is right up there with Lllloyd Carr. This game will spawn endless trash talk from PSU fans about the ND game coming up next season.

COTTON BOWL

New Years Resolutions for the Huskers and Tigers 1. Never fire a coach after he wins 9 games...it takes a while to catch up. 2. Have the "student-athlete" actually do his school work. It's just an option.

• Subway Domer------------- AU 18 NEB 9 Low scoring and boring. I have made calls like this already this bowl season and been wrong. This time, not so much.
• PS2-------------------------AU 27 NEB 17 Was a 3 point game in the middle of the 1st. Kenny Irons took over like he was supposed to all year. Auburn looked pathetic and won what was a horrible game to watch.

GATOR BOWL

Way to go Reggie ball! Here are your resolutions. 1. Always throw to the man-child Calvin Johnson. 2. Go to class Mr. Student Athlete. Oh and I got one for you too MR Rodriguez 1. Do not borderline accept a new job i.e. Bama and then become a pussy overnight.

• Subway Domer--------------WV 33 GT 13 Pat White and company roll as the Jackets fold. "I've got no heart!"- Ron Burgundy
• PS2-------------------------WV 27 GT 35 Poor thing. The box thought GT had Ball and that Tashard Choice was going to have a big game.

Terrific comeback game. Hats off to Pat Whit for a gritty performance. I know it was only one game, but how could Ball hold Bennett behind him all season? Calvin Johnson is an animal and may have been what God had in mind when He created Adam.

CAPITAL ONE BOWL

Here are your resolutions Pigs and Wannabe Skunkbears. Arkansas: 1. Stop hiring high school coaches to get recruits 2. Stop letting the players moms run the program. Wisconsin: 1. Stop bitching about the lack of respect and play someone outside of the MAC 2. Beg the Big Integer to play a round robin or add a conference championship game.

• Subway Domer-------------- WISC 28 ARK 24 The Badgers say "up yours" to the SEC once again and take care of business with P.J. Hill running wild.
• PS2--------------------------WISC 17 ARK 35 I think the PS2 like the fact the Hawgs have players named Moore, Goode, Dick.

Great game but it had a lot of turnovers. Congrats to Wisconsin and its first year coach. The Badgers OWN the SEC.

ROSE BOWL

The Grandaddy of them all. Is that why you have no idea about the NC game? Because according to ESPN this is the only game that matters. (More on that on a later date) Here are your resolutions Condoms: 1. Quit letting Snoop on the sideline. Give him a degree first and then you may have your mascot back 2.
